How to enable Windows Defender's PUP protection

One of the latest additions to Windows Defender Antivirus' arsenal of protection tools blocks potentially unwanted programs, short PUPs, from landing on the system or being installed on Windows PCs.

Note: Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) and Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) refer to the same type of potentially unwanted software.

Microsoft improved the defensive capabilities of the built-in antivirus and security tool Windows Defender significantly for Windows 10.

The company added features such as Windows Defender System Guard and Application Guard, Network protection, Controlled Folder Access, or Exploit protection in recent years to the tool. Microsoft even published Windows Defender Browser Protection for Google Chrome.

Some features are reserved for Enterprise editions of Windows 10 but some are also available in Home editions.

Open Windows PowerShell with Windows-X and the selection of Windows PowerShell (Admin) from the context menu.

If you don't see Windows PowerShell (Admin) listed there do the following instead: open Start, type Windows PowerShell, right-click on the result, and select "run as administrator".
- Confirm the UAC prompt that is displayed.
- The console that opens should being with "Administrator".
- Type "Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection Enabled" and hit the Return-key.

Microsoft's patches for the Meltdown vulnerability have had a fatal flaw all these past months, according to Alex Ionescu, a security researcher with cyber-security firm Crowdstrike.

Only patches for Windows 10 versions were affected, the researcher wrote today in a tweet. Microsoft quietly fixed the issue on Windows 10 Redstone 4 (v1803), also known as the April 2018 Update, released on Monday.

Web browser Spectre Check

Find out if your browser is vulnerable to Spectre attacks

Web browsers are the main target for attacks targeting the recently disclosed Spectre vulnerability. For home systems, one could argue that web browsers are the major attack vector. Why? Because browsers connect to remote sites, and these sites may run JavaScript to exploit the vulnerability.

Some browser makers pushed out patches fast. Mozilla and Microsoft did for instance whereas Google and the whole Chromium-based group of browsers are not patched yet.

There are ways to mitigate the issue in Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers such as Opera or Vivaldi. To mitigate known attack forms, users or admins have to enable strict site isolation in the web browser to do so.

While you can check whether your Windows operating system is vulnerable, you could not check whether your web browser is patched or vulnerable up until now.

With WPA3, Wi-Fi Security is About To Get a Lot Tougher

NAME
At last, Wi-Fi security—or lack of—is about to get its day in the sun.

The Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry body made up of device makers including Apple, Microsoft, and Qualcomm, announced Monday its next-generation wireless network security standard, WPA3. The standard will replace WPA2, a near-two decades-old security protocol that's built in to protect almost every wireless device today—including phones, laptops, and the Internet of Things.

One of the key improvements in WPA3 will aim to solve a common security problem: open Wi-Fi networks. Seen in coffee shops and airports, open Wi-Fi networks are convenient but unencrypted, allowing anyone on the same network to intercept data sent from other devices.

WPA3 employs individualized data encryption, which scramble the connection between each device on the network and the router, ensuring secrets are kept safe and sites that you visit haven't been manipulated.

Another key improvement in WPA3 will protect against brute-force dictionary attacks, making it tougher for attackers near your Wi-Fi network to guess a list of possible passwords.

The new wireless security protocol will also block an attacker after too many failed password guesses.
