An end of an era
An end of an era

Microsoft is killing off Windows Phone 8.1 support today, more than three years after the company first introduced the update. The end of support marks an end to the Windows Phone era, and the millions of devices still running the operating system. While most have accepted that the death of Windows Phone occurred more than a year ago, AdDuplex estimates that nearly 80 percent of all Windows-powered phones are still running Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8, or Windows Phone 8.1. All of these handsets are now officially unsupported, and only 20 percent of all Windows phones are running the latest Windows 10 Mobile OS.

Google Ordered to Produce Emails

Magistrate Judge Thomas J. Rueter of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania has ordered Google to produce customer emails stored abroad.

The ruling is in stark contrast to a similar case against Microsoft. In this case, the judge ruled that the emails fall under the Stored Communications Act (SCA) which would allow the two warrants to proceed in that they constituted neither a seizure nor a search of the targets' data in a foreign country.

Since Google regularly transfers data from one storage center to their data center in California, it does not amount to a seizure because "there is no meaningful interference with the account holder's possessory interest in the user data."

"Google admits that the location of the data could change from the time the Government applies for legal process to the time when the process is served upon Google," the Judge wrote.

The judge held that under the warrants against Google, "the invasions of privacy will occur in the United States; the searches of the electronic data disclosed by Google pursuant to the warrants will occur in the United States when the FBI reviews the copies of the requested data in Pennsylvania." He described the cases against Google as involving a "permissible domestic application of the SCA, even if other conduct (the electronic transfer of data) occurs abroad."

Google said it planned to appeal the case. "We will continue to push back on overbroad warrants," it added.

Windows 10 personal data collection ruled 'excessive'

Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system collects "excessive" data on users, violates privacy laws in "numerous" ways and must be fixed within three months, France's national data privacy watchdog announced Wednesday.

The findings could herald decisions expected in the coming months in Canada and other European countries over an operating system that has raised a rash of privacy concerns about how it tracks users.

France's Commission Nationale de l'Informatique et des Libertés (National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties, or CNIL in French) says in a notice posted online today that it has warned Microsoft about the breaches and the software giant could be penalized if it doesn't "cease the excessive collection of users' data and browsing history without their consent."

The agency alleges Microsoft is violating France's data privacy law by:

- Using Windows 10 to track all the programs users install on their system and the amount of time they spend using each one.

- Allowing users to set a relatively weak, four-digit PIN code to access online services, including online payment history, without capping the number of incorrect PIN attempts before someone is locked out of the account.

- Targeting users with Microsoft and third-party advertising based on their browsing history, without prior user consent.

- Tracking and targeting users with browser cookies without informing them or implementing an opt-out.

- Transmitting personal information back to the United States, where Microsoft is headquartered, under the auspices of the EU-U.S. "safe harbour" agreement, despite a decision last October by the European Court of Justice ruling the agreement invalid.

Prompted by media reports and letters from several French political parties, France's data privacy agency began looking into Windows 10 shortly after the operating system launched in July 2015.

The agency is considered one of the toughest in Europe and has already gone after Google over the European Union's "right to be forgotten" rule.

Other European national privacy watchdogs are also looking at Windows 10, as is the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Microsoft vice-president David Heiner said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that the company "will work closely with the CNIL over the next few months to understand the agency's concerns fully and to work toward solutions that it will find acceptable."

He added that Microsoft is "working now toward" meeting the terms of the new EU-U.S. Privacy Shield, a more stringent framework meant to replace the "safe harbour" agreement.

God Mode Being Used to Hide Malware

According to McAfee Labs/Intel Security, hackers are exploiting the 'God Mode' admin feature in Microsoft Windows to hide their malware.

God Mode is an undocumented feature built into all versions of Windows since Vista. With it, users can get quick access to all Windows control panels and settings.

Craig Schmugar, McAfee research architect, says: "Attackers are now using this undocumented feature for evil ends."

McAfee has found an instance of the Dynamer Trojan hidden inside a shortcut folder. However, when a user clicks on the folder, it is empty.

"To make matters worse," Schmugar says, "the malware author has attempted to give this directory eternal life, by pre-pending the name 'com4'. Such device names are forbidden by normal Windows Explorer and cmd.exe commands and Windows treats the folder as a device - thus preventing users from otherwise easily deleting the folder with Explorer or typical console commands."

If you find you are infected with this malware, the solution is to terminate the malware via Task Manager or similar then run this command from the command prompt (cmd.exe):

> rd ".%appdata%com4.{241D7C96-F8BF-4F85-B01F-E2B043341A4B}" /S /Q

Windows 10 upgrade may turn retail OS into OEM version

Microsoft's free upgrade offer to Windows 10 stands until July 2016. Customers who work on genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 systems may upgrade those systems to Microsoft's newest operating system Windows 10 free of charge.

It does not matter whether the source operating system is an OEM or Retail version, as both upgrade just fine to the new OS.

Retail versions offer the advantage that they allow you to change hardware of the PC without losing your license. The operating system will either activate automatically after the hardware swap or after contacting Microsoft.
